things i have been listening to

reminder: show tomorrow. please come! i think it will be fun, and if you've seen me before, well, this will be very different. hopefully good/heartbreaking, like i always aim for, but in a totally new way. plus, i KNOW you want to see me transition from wilson pickett into muscles. i know it.

so i just discovered this, which is a lovely retrospective on all the nice things noted murderer, crazy person and all-around asshole Phil Spector did for music. take a listen. i had no idea that he was responsible for both "on broadway" and "rock and roll high school."

in doing so, i discovered a song i'd never actually heard all the way through (though i had heard the chorus, because you couldn't possibly have not heard it). it's called... wait for it... across the universe.

yeah, yeah. i have bad parents who didn't play the beatles when i was growing up.

anyway, it's fucking beautiful, which you already probably knew. it made me a little sad, because that melody's already taken, but i think i've come down philosophically: at least the melody exists in the world. here's the anthology version, heavy on sitar and with a really nice vocal by john, with some lurvely pictures.

also, adventureland has gotten me started with the replacements. go listen to unsatisfied right now. paul westerberg's voice makes me understand indie-guitar-rock so much better than i did before.
